No matter the vice, you do not have to face this challenge on your own.

The use of illicit and legal substances, or other addictive behaviors, may take many forms. At the Sawyer Wellness Group, we take a nonjudgmental and compassionate stance on addictive behaviors and strive to help you find the right strategy to help with your long-term goals. We recognize that you may have a variety of goals in mind when it comes to addiction recovery and we provide the compassionate support you need to improve your situation.

Types of Addictions

When it comes to addictive behaviors, you may be surprised to discover that drug abuse and alcohol abuse are not the only concerns that may arise. You may also develop addictive behaviors when it relates to activities that you enjoy. Common types of addictions that may develop include:

  • Drug addictions, including addictions to opiate substances like heroin and prescription pain medications

  • Cannabis abuse

  • Alcohol abuse and addiction

  • Sex addiction

  • Gambling addiction

  • Porn addiction

  • Technology/Gaming addiction

Addictions to a behavior differ from addictions to a substance due to the nature of the addiction. You are not using a substance; however, you get a similar feeling of a high as cannabis or other substances. In some cases, your goal for recovery may not focus on avoiding or abstaining entirely from the addictive behavior or substance. You may focus on moderation, particularly in cases of sex addiction or similar behavioral addictions.

Signs of a Problem

When you have concerns that you or a loved one may be an alcoholic or have other challenges with addiction, you want to recognize the signs of a problem. While specific signs of substance abuse or drug abuse may vary based on the specific substance, certain symptoms are common among many addictive behaviors.

Common signs of addiction or dependence include:

  • Building up a tolerance so that you or a loved one uses a larger amount of the substance over time

  • Withdrawal symptoms when you do not use the substance or engage in the behavior, such as shakes, flu-like symptoms, or feeling sick

  • Losing interest in hobbies or things you enjoyed in the past

  • Borrowing or stealing money to maintain the behavior or keep using the substance

  • Constantly thinking about the substance or behavior

  • Withdrawing from loved ones

  • Difficulty keeping up with daily necessities, such as cooking or cleaning

  • Changes to sleep habits

If you suspect that you have a problem with substance abuse or addictive behaviors, then you may want to take measures to address the underlying problems. At the Sawyer Wellness Group, we take a compassionate and nonjudgmental approach to help you reach your goals of moderation or abstinence.
